dago axle: Ford I-beam front axle
which had been rebuilt between the spring-hanger and spindle to
lower the front of the car by as much as three inches. Term originated
from Ed "Axle" Stewart, who made these axles in his
San Diego shop. They were first referred to as "San Diego"
axles, then "Diego," and finally Dago, having no reference
to a person of Italian heritage.
deuce:
any 1932 Ford roadster or coupe.
dog clutch:
an in-out type clutch using a gear shift to engage the spline
or dog ears of the engine crankshaft and the driveshaft together.
drag race: side-by-side acceleration
contest between two or more vehicles on a flat, straight surface
usually no more than 1/4 mile in length. The first known use of
the term in print was by Wally Parks in the March 1939 issue of
SCTA Kicinii News. But it didn't catch on at that time, and wasn't
in general use until after WWII.
